Ruslan Karpets, 24, a father of two from Kremenets in Ternopil region, volunteered to serve in the Ukrainian military (128th Guards Mountain Brigade) along with his three friends. Ruslan was severely wounded in Debaltseve in September 2014 while one of his friends was killed, and two suffered from a post-concussion syndrome. Ruslan lost his left arm and had his left leg fractured during the shelling by multiple rocket launchers. He spent a month in the intensive-care unit and underwent nine complex surgeries. Ruslan needs a sophisticated prosthesis because his shoulder joint had to be removed during the arm amputation surgery. On behalf of our supporters, on March 19, 2015, a UWA representative in Ukraine delivered $100 USD to Ruslan at the Kyiv Military Hospital.
In August 2014, 19-year-old Vasyl and other volunteer fighters of the "Aidar" battalion were ambushed near the town of Novosvitlivka, Luhansk region, on their way to the hospital. A grenade hit their van and Vasyl lost consciousness. When he opened his eyes he was lying on the ground, with a dead body on top of him. As he watched the vehicle and three of his friends burn in it alive he contemplated blowing himself up with a grenade. He tried to crawl away but received numerous gun stock blows to his back and was told he's captured. One of the Russian-backed terrorists saw the "Glory to Ukraine!" tattooed on his arm, grabbed an axe, and chopped off Vasyl's arm. Vasyl was then taken to the hospital, and spent a month in captivity before being swapped for another prisoner of war. On behalf of its supporters UWA representatives in Ukraine delivered $500 USD to Vasyl on March 13, 2015, $50 on April 1, 2015.
In October 2014 volunteer fighters of the "Aidar" battalion, including Maksym, were ambushed in their van on the way to help the National Guard. After receiving numerous gunshot wounds the fighters were taken captive, where the unit's commander was executed. Due to the lack of timely medical care while in captivity Maksym's left leg became affected with gangrene and had to be amputated. Maksym spent 28 days as a prisoner of war before being exchanged and reunited with his wife and his 4-year-old son. Ukraine War Amps delivered $500 to Maxim Vakulenko in March 2015.

The 24-year-old Lieutenant Oleg Berezovsky lost both wrists during the fighting in Sloviansk. Oleg served in the Special Forces of the National Guard in Alexandria, Kirovograd region of Ukraine. In addition to wrists amputation Oleg received multiple shrapnel wounds to the body, and a penetrating shrapnel wound to the cornea of his eyes. This is how Oleg describes his experience: “I am from Kharkiv. All my life I worked for the military, graduated the Academy in 2011, went to Kyiv, where I worked, and then joined the Special Forces and worked there for a year and a half. When ATO started I went there by myself. As we drove in column formation we got ambushed. We were shelled with grenade launchers. We had submachine guns and APCs. I was inside my APC when the grenade hit it.“ We have raised US$600 for this Hero and delivered it to him in October and November 2014.
